Chaffetz Lindsey Talks Jus AI Assistant: Insights from Early Access Program Participants

AI is reshaping industries worldwide, and the legal industry is no exception. As the leading provider of legal tech solutions in the arbitration industry, Jus Mundi unveiled earlier this year Jus AI Assistant, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) solution that revolutionizes the way the global arbitration community shapes winning strategies.

We interviewed our Early Access Program participants, which are law firms leading the way in innovation, to gather their insights on Jus AI Assistant and how the tool accelerates their legal research, streamlines their workflows, and elevate their strategic analysis.

Chaffetz Lindsey is the leading US-based international arbitration boutique. The firm was founded almost 15 years ago and provides top-tier counsel on complex international arbitrations around the world. Recognized for its excellence, it has been nominated for Jus Connect’s Arbitration Team of the Month (ATOM) Award and acknowledged by Law 360 as one of the “Top 4 International Arbitration Boutiques” globally.

We sat down with their International Arbitration team, James Hosking (Founding Partner), and Douglas Gibson (Director of Information) to discuss their vision and usage of generative AI, and especially Jus AI Assistant.

What is the vision or strategy of Chaffetz Lindsey when it comes to generative AI & emerging technologies?

At Chaffetz Lindsey, we recognize the transformative potential of generative AI and emerging technologies in the legal field. Our strategy is to embrace these innovations proactively, while maintaining our standards to deliver the service that our firm is known for. We aim to leverage cutting-edge tools like Jus AI Assistant to enhance our efficiency, depth of analysis, and, ultimately, the quality of our work. Our vision is to integrate AI tools in a way that complements our team’s expertise, allowing us to deliver exceptional value to our clients. We also feel that it is important to be part of the conversation about ethical AI use from the beginning. We feel that human judgment is always going to be part of the process; we just need to find the right balance when leveraging technology.

What motivated your team to join the Jus AI Assistant Early Access Program?

Our decision to join the alpha program is driven by our dedication to pioneering new solutions and achieving excellence in our legal practices. As early adopters, we recognized the potential of this cutting-edge tool to augment our research capabilities, streamline workflows, and provide valuable insights, aligning perfectly with our goals of improving service delivery through technological integration. We are driven by the expected improvements in client outcomes.

In what ways has Jus AI Assistant proven particularly useful in conducting legal research?

James Hosking: Jus AI Assistant has proven particularly useful in conducting legal research by expediting the initial stages. It has transformed our legal research process by providing precise, relevant information summaries, and the ability to find something quickly. This enables our team to focus on higher-level analysis and strategy.

Doug Gibson: Personally, I think the summarization and Q&A tools in Jus AI Assistant will be must-haves for anyone practicing in this area of law. With the built-in RAG element, a link to the source of where a fact or cite is located, gives the attorney the ability to verify in real time, which is how attorneys work already.

How has Jus AI Assistant impacted your team’s productivity?

Integrating Jus AI Assistant into our workflow has significantly boosted our team’s productivity so we can focus more on critical thinking and strategy development without compromising quality. We can now prioritize the strategic aspects of cases over time-consuming ones.

What feature did you particularly find useful and why?

James Hosking: By including links to the source of the data, Jus AI Assistant allows an attorney to verify the accuracy of the information in real time. This is an absolute must-have feature and works with incredible efficiency. The summaries were also spot on. What I thought useful was the ability to interact with the documents and drill down as needed on a specific fact or point of law.

Doug Gibson: Personally, what I thought was brilliant – and this might seem trivial to some but is a great time saver – was that you could interact with the documents but didn’t always have to list the party in full. “Claimant” or “respondent” was enough. The LLM/algorithm knew how to interpret the party correctly.

In what ways do you believe AI has influenced the legal industry so far?

James Hosking: AI has impacted the legal industry by boosting productivity in legal research and reducing the time needed to review documents. AI has also changed decision-making by leveraging predictive analytics for risk assessments. Others have leveraged AI to help think outside the box when evaluating strategy options. The full impact of generative AI drafting a pleading better than a draft is still on the horizon, which is a good thing for many of us.

Doug Gibson: Personally, in addition to streamlining research, the biggest impact of AI coming soon will be on discovery.

What do you foresee will be the impact of AI on the arbitration world?

James Hosking: AI’s impact on the arbitration world will be transformative, but with this change comes new opportunities. For example, we must rethink the business of law as well as the practice of law. Regarding the former, new business models will emerge as AI’s adoption on the practice of law becomes more pervasive. In many ways, AI will be the catalyst of change for good or bad.

Doug Gibson: We will also have to work through related issues, such as ethical and regulatory concerns. For the arbitration world this could mean operating under multiple regulatory frameworks at the same time. But going forward we will also have to factor in AI transparency and bias while maintaining data privacy and confidentiality. The arbitration world will have to develop frameworks to deal with these issues.
