AI is reshaping industries worldwide, and the legal industry is no exception. As the leading provider of legal tech solutions in the arbitration industry, Jus Mundi unveiled earlier this year Jus AI Assistant, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) solution that revolutionizes the way the global arbitration community shapes winning strategies.
We interviewed our Early Access Program participants, which are law firms leading the way in innovation, to gather their insights on Jus AI Assistant and how the tool accelerates their legal research, streamlines their workflows, and elevate their strategic analysis.
Wordstone Dispute Resolution is a law firm dedicated to international arbitration. It was founded by Eduardo Silva-Romero and José-Manuel García Represa, and count Catalina Echeverri Gallego also as a partner, and Audrey Caminades as of counsel.
Wordstone is committed to delivering the highest quality legal representation in complex international disputes, including commercial arbitrations, investor-State arbitrations, and arbitration-related litigation. Their lawyers operate globally, spanning diverse jurisdictions, arbitral institutions, and industry sectors, providing specialized services in multiple languages. Over many years, their diverse and technically gifted legal team has played a pivotal role in securing landmark arbitration awards, especially in proceedings involving States and State-owned entities. Wordstone’s unique structure enables the team to draw upon inclusivity, flexibility, and collaboration to challenge expectations, applying careful consideration and original thought to each matter.
We sat down with Javier Echeverri, Senior Associate, to discuss Wordstone’s vision and usage of generative AI, and especially Jus AI Assistant.
What is Wordstone’s strategy when it comes to generative AI & emerging technologies?
Our strategy is centered on enhancing our efficiency and delivering superior service to our clients. We commit to innovation at the service of improving our capabilities. This includes streamlining legal research, document review, and case management under the careful control and review of lawyers trained in AI and in secure environments that guarantee confidentiality, data integrity, and the minimization of hallucination risks. We seek to find ways AI will boost productivity, ensuring our clients will keep receiving the highest and the same (if not improved) quality and value from our services.
What motivated your firm to participate in Jus AI Assistant Early Access Program?
Participating in Jus AI Assistant’s Early Access Program was an unmissable opportunity for us to shape the development of a groundbreaking legal tool from its early stages. Our involvement also allows our lawyers to interact with experts at Jus Mundi and have firsthand experience of how an innovative product like Jus AI Assistant is built and designed. Teaming up with Jus Mundi aligns perfectly with our commitment to pioneering innovation in the legal field.
In what ways has Jus AI Assistant proven particularly useful in conducting legal research?
Jus AI Assistant has proven to be very useful in our legal research efforts. It allows us to focus on specific issues and quickly retrieve relevant information, including textual quotes from case documents, which is a great starting point for any research. Using Jus AI Assistant has therefore resulted in saved time and improved efficiency. This tool complements perfectly our team members’ wealth of knowledge in arbitration law and certainly helps us navigate the vast Jus Mundi database.
As the use of AI tools is still new to the legal profession, do you think lawyers will need to be trained in generative AI in order to be most efficient?
Training in the use of AI tools is a must for maximizing efficiency and productivity. Understanding how to prompt AI tools to yield the most accurate answers in the shortest amount of time is crucial. This requires familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of AI algorithms and the nuances of formulating effective queries.
Moreover, training is essential to help lawyers identify and avoid potential pitfalls such as hallucinations and confidentiality risks. It is well known that AI tools may generate erroneous or misleading results; thus, conscious control and review of the machine’s work are required. For instance, Jus AI Assistant provides the relevant documents from which it sources information, which makes checking the quality and reliability of the information provided easy.
Additionally, ensuring the security and confidentiality of sensitive legal information when interacting with AI platforms is of utmost importance. Jus Mundi understands this and has provided us with the necessary assurances.
As AI continues to progress, integrating AI tools such as the Assistant in legal practice will inevitably create a gap between lawyers trained and proficient in its use and those not. Lawyers and firms equipped with the skills to leverage these tools will likely enjoy greater efficiency and effectiveness in their work, ultimately enhancing their competitiveness (to the benefit of clients) and relevance in the legal landscape.
