Press Release
Paris, 4 October 2024
On September 26, the 2024 China Arbitration Summit and China-North Africa-Middle East Arbitration Summit were successfully held in Beijing.
The summit provided a high-level platform for arbitration professionals from China and abroad to strategize on international arbitration development and collaborate on major international arbitration initiatives. Participants reached broad consensus on promoting mutual exchange, cooperation, and development in international arbitration, achieving practical results. This event holds significant importance for deepening regional arbitration legal cooperation, advancing the international arbitration sector, and upholding global economic and trade order. The extensive cooperative achievements from the summit demonstrate the growing influence and appeal of Chinese arbitration, represented by CIETAC, on the world stage. The construction of the China International Commercial Court is showing gradual effectiveness, positioning itself as a solid global destination for international arbitration.
To further deepen practical cooperation among international arbitration institutions and legal service providers, CIETAC signed a cooperation agreement with Jus Mundi during this summit. The agreement includes mechanisms for joint research projects, collaborative training activities, mutual referral of arbitrators, and shared use of hearing facilities.
The China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and Jus Mundi are delighted to announce a new partnership to share non-confidential CIETAC arbitration awards and related CIETAC arbitration materials, free to the general public, for greater understanding of maritime arbitration in China, and for the benefit of the public good.
In the global partnership, CIETAC will select non-confidential arbitration awards and related information for Jus Mundi to host on its open public database, allowing anyone in the world to search these materials using Jus Mundi’s open research tools.
“With the digital support of Jus Mundi, CIETAC will be accessible to more users, and their feedback and participation will in turn add to the richness and contextual nature of the content CIETAC offers and further empower our outreach efforts beyond China to the globe.”
Speaking about the partnership, Jean-Rémi de Maistre, CEO & Co-Founder of Jus Mundi, said:
“The China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) is China’s key and vital arbitral institution. Jus Mundi is honored to form this global partnership with CIETAC, which will see non-confidential arbitration awards made available to the world, in the name of greater understanding of arbitration in China. We are pleased to provide these important materials not just to the legal community in the region, but also in the name of the greater public good.”
The partnership will see select CIETAC arbitration awards and related materials hosted on Jus Mundi’s comprehensive international law and arbitration database.
About CIETAC
The China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) is one of the major permanent arbitration institutions in the world.
Formerly known as the Foreign Trade Arbitration Commission, CIETAC was set up in April1956 under the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) in accordance with the Decision Concerning the Establishment of A Foreign Trade Arbitration Commission Within the China Council For the Promotion of International Trade adopted on May 6, 1954 at the 215th session of the Government Administration Council. To meet the needs of China’s ever-developing economic and trade relations with foreign countries after the adoption of the “reform and opening-up” policy, the Foreign Trade arbitration was first renamed as Foreign Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission in 1980 pursuant to the State Council’s Notice Concerning the Conversion of the Foreign Trade Arbitration Commission Into the Foreign Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, and then as the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission in 1988 pursuant to the State Council’s Official Reply Concerning the Renaming of the Arbitration Commission as the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission and Amendment of Its Arbitration Rules. Since 2000, CIETAC is also known as the Arbitration Court of the China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC).
