To mark the end of the 22nd Brazilian Arbitration Committee (CBAr) International Arbitration Conference, the Clube dos Arbitralistas Lusófonos (CAL) and the Rising Arbitrators Initiative (RAI) jointly hosted a pleasant networking lunch in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The meeting was held to present a more comprehensive overview of their objectives to the Brazilian arbitration community and to engage in discussions regarding the role of arbitrators and the Lusophone community.

The lunch was organized by Alexander Leventhal, Ana Gerdau de Borja Mercereau, Flavia Mange, Carolina Braga, Lara Yokota, and Mônica Murayama and hosted by Quinn Emanuel.

Jus Mundi was honored to be invited to the lunch, represented by Bianca Longo, our Country Director for Brazil.

For those unable to attend the event, Jus Mundi was pleased to interview Ana Gerdau de Borja Mercereau and Lara Yokota from the Clube dos Arbitralistas Lusófonos (CAL), as well as Flavia Mange and Alexander Leventhal from the Rising Arbitrators Initiative (RAI), to spread the word about these projects to anyone interested. Check out the interviews below.

What are the primary purposes of those projects?

Clube dos Arbitralistas Lusófonos (CAL): The Clube dos Arbitralistas Lusófonos is a network created to bring Lusophone arbitration practitioners closer together and to promote the development of international arbitration practice in Portuguese. To this end, CAL encourages the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and good arbitration practices through academic, social, and cultural events, as well as through its mailing list.

Rising Arbitrators Initiative (RAI): The Rising Arbitrators Initiative seeks to empower the next generation of leading arbitrators.  It is a network of individuals receiving their first appointments as arbitrators and a forum for them to discuss their concerns and learn best practices. RAI routinely holds members-only and open events with the world’s leading arbitrators.

How are those initiatives helping to develop arbitration and promote diversity?

Clube dos Arbitralistas Lusófonos (CAL): Through the organization of arbitration events and online exchanges, including the diffusion of a series of interviews (Lusofonia na Arbitragem) and a series of short articles (Diálogos Lusófonos), CAL seeks to promote discussions among Lusophone arbitration practitioners from around the world. CAL currently has members from Angola, Brazil, China, England, France, Germany, Macao, Mozambique, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States of America, and Uruguay.

Rising Arbitrators Initiative (RAI): RAI offers training and resources to the next generation of arbitrators, raises their profile, and assists them in learning and applying best practices.

How can a person become a member?

Clube dos Arbitralistas Lusófonos (CAL): Registration is possible via this link. New members are accepted throughout the year.

Rising Arbitrators Initiative (RAI): Visit our website here and fill out the form. We admit new members twice per year.
